About
Heather Sparling is an ethnomusicologist who has a research specialty in Scottish Gaelic song in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. She is currently working on a project about disaster songs of Atlantic Canada (disastersongs.ca). Her publications have addressed Bourdieu's cultural capital, genre theory, intersections of orality and literacy, language attitudes, and tourism. She is also Co-Chair of the History & Culture department and the General Editor of *MUSICultures,* the journal of the Canadian Society for Traditional Music (www.yorku.ca/cstm/publications).
In addition to her work at Cape Breton University, Heather is the principal flutist with the Cape Breton Orchestra, Chieftain of the Cape Breton Gaelic Society, and teaches Gaelic in the Sydney area.
